Strong climate action could wipe $756bn from individuals’ pension funds and other investments in rich countriesIndividuals in rich countries face huge financial losses if climate action slashes the value of fossil fuel assets, a study shows, despite many oil and gas fields being in other countries. The researchers estimated that existing oil and gas projects worth $1.4tn (£1.1tn) would lose their value if the world moved decisively to cut carbon emissions and limit global heating to 2C. By tracking many thousands of projects through 1.8m companies to their ultimate owners, the team found most of the losses would be borne by individual people through their pensions, investment funds and share holdings. Homeless charity’s fight over rent arrears adds to property funds’ woes, including rising interest rates and sceptical investorsMatt Fearnley’s charity owes almost £1m in rent to its landlord – but that bill is likely to keep growing unless his long list of complaints ranging from black mould to leaking ceilings is addressed.Fearnley, the chief executive of homelessness charity Noble Tree Foundation, has withheld several months’ rent from Home Reit, a London Stock Exchange-listed real estate investment trust, over what he says is £3.2m owed for repairs and insurance that have not been forthcoming. Hedge fund joke
Index fund idol, a long only genius and me are flying in to deliver investment presentations to an institutional client in New Zealand. As the plane comes in to land we see a purple sheep alone in a field.Professor Passive says “Every kiwi sheep is purple! I must buy them ALL, now, at ANY price the owners ask, no matter how high or overvalued. It’s not my money. No need to know ovine business or earnings. Forget about analysis or due diligence. Ignore risk! Prices are always correct as markets are efficient. I have academic tenure and Swedish taxpayers awarded me a fake ‘Nobel’ in economic ‘sciences’ which I’ve been using for asset gathering marketing ever since. Risk free…for me.”Beta Bandit says “Some kiwi … [Read More...]

Buffett’s Alpha?
Warren Buffett prudently invests 99% of his wealth in absolute return strategies, like most risk averse savers. Leverage, arbitrage, derivatives, event-driven, opportunistic, special situations and macro strategies have driven his returns since inception in 1954. Short selling cocoa futures was Warren’s first major arbitrage. Despite FACTS, some insult Warren by claiming he isn’t even a hedge fund manager! If Berkshire Hathaway isn’t the archetypal hedge fund, there are no hedge funds. BRKA manages $500 billion, AUM grown from capital appreciation not from wining and dining pension “consultants”.One counterexample, ONE, is sufficient to destroy the dangerous passive fad and ridicule index fund “Nobel” laureates. Don’t trust naive lists of unanalyzed stocks sold as “low fee” but high cost, no skill, zero work, volatile index funds. Past returns … [Read More...]
Reasons to Oppose the SEC’s New 13F Proposal
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has proposed amendments to 13F filings. Currently, investment managers with holdings of US securities totaling $100 million or more are required to file a 13F each quarter. The proposal seeks to increase that level 35x to managers holding $3.5 billion or more. The result? A 90% reduction in the number of 13Fs filed. This would reduce the number of hedge funds that file from 800 down to less than 100. It would decrease total filers from around 5,283 to a mere 549. $2.3 trillion in investment holdings would no longer be disclosed. The proposal lays out the pros of making this change, so herein we’ll examine the counterpoints to their arguments and the cons of making such a drastic change. There’s also information … [Read More...]
